One Little Book:

Fifty Cents' Worth of Thoughts on the Future of Humanity

... My message is urgent. The sands are trickling through our fingers .
There is no more time for careless rapture, nor haunted neglect. Nor what may be most difficult, dealing with honest despair.

Being active, good and loving to the world is our only chance. What a stroke of good fortune ! We can all arise from our darkness. There is a dawn every day. Crisis opportunity!

Can I state the obvious in resounding tones, to bring it fresh in your face ? Perhaps we'll surpass our inclinations, cross the waste of our lost hopes, stumble back into Paradise, this quiet dangerous blissful place, the seed bank of our dreams. Which can be right here, even now, even now. Truly.

Listen.

The Little Book of Tamworth Learning Circles

The Little Book of Tamworth Learning Circles is a short account of the genesis, nature, history and character of an idiosyncratic small school in New Hampshire, which flourished in the 1990's and the first decade and a half of the twenty first century. TLC was a place of boundless ambition: the intention was to offer an environment where children could thrive with open-ended aspirations, to develop the wide range of skills their abilities demanded, and to grow into their potential as creative individuals. In the daily life of the place there were basic assumptions of focused work and the nurture of inner discipline and high standards: these aims to be achieved without the traditional carrots and sticks of grades or constant competition, still less any heavy-handed authority or punishments. These pages are an attempt at an honest account of the place, and the degree to which it succeeded. They are also an affectionate tribute to a wonderful group of enterprising families and their students.
