For some reason my thoughts have turned to marriage
recently. This little poem is not about your marriage or our marriage,
but about that strange festival of optimism in general, with the next
generation being as daft about it as we were/are....
"Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer, do -
I'm half crazy, all for the love of you..." Popular song by Harry Dacre
Marriage is a monocycle made for two
We look sweet upon the seat
Heading unsteadily, quite a feat
Out of the church and into the blue.
It wasn't a stylish marriage
We couldn't afford a carriage
But, all the rest afforded,
The families applauded
And dreamed that lifetime we'd possess
Those misty years of happiness -
We mounted up and waved goodbye
And didn't bother to learn to fly
We were off to our cottage with roses round the door
On a wobbly monocycle with the whole world to explore.
