Poetry: The Riven Tree

I was born one day when the sun shone
It beamed every second
The Earth turned and turned
Clouds moved across the sky
Water cycled and cycled
Dominated everything.
Nature rejoiced.
I crept along in the shadows
Emerged once the dinosaurs were gone..

So the sun, water and the good earth
Cooked up a storm
Cooked up life
So much life, it filled every cranny
My day was flooded with love
I was taken by surprise
Life took me by surprise
Love took me by surprise
The point about Eden
Is you don't know you're there.

Now I am the riven tree
I have been struck by lightning
I have been struck by love
Existence has been fiery, shocking
I've never really coped.
But what there is left of me is still standing
Optimism sends out tender shoots from the woodpeckered trunk
The riven tree still stands in the forest
And picks up the messages below ground
Stays engaged in life
In touch with the hidden biomass
Struck, struck by love.
